Countdown to the Fourth and Other Hoopla

I've had a lot on my mind recently, so I've zoned out making hollow beads. I love winding disks of transparent glass, joining them and then watching them puff up into little hollows in the flame. To me, it's immensely relaxing. Plus you end up with such pretty beads in the kiln! These will be put up in the Boutique today.

The top hollow is green side up and the bottom is purple side up.

Here's a matched pair all ready to go!

Frit is something else I like to play with when my mind is full of other things. These little chunky beads are Double Helix' Psyche medium frit over copper green and encased in pale, pale aqua. I think I'm gonna make myself a bracelet! (I never make any jewelry to keep. Sorta like the cobbler's kids never having shoes, I just never seem to keep any of the beads I make for myself!)

More Psyche frit - over ivory this time, I think.

Garden Art

No, this funky giraffe isn't mine. I snapped a picture of it hanging around the hosta bed of a family a few streets over while I was driving around not too long ago. I wish I had one like it though! The metal artist used to have an awesome storefront on The Square, converted from a seriously old gas station, but he had to close up shop recently. In this economy, people are more concerned with paying bills and buying groceries than they are in spending money on handmade yard art - and rightly so.

Still...I would've liked the opportunity to get one someday.

*sigh*

Patriot Beads

New beads this morning!

BOUTIQUE

Also, I will be working on a new "Sale" update sometime this week. Yep - time to go through the bead box again!

Almost Officially Dead

My much-loved Sony Cyber-shot camera is in its final death throes. I tried to turn it on this morning to photograph some beads, and while there was the familiar chime and faint mechanical whirring of the lens sliding out, the LCD screen has gone completely grey. I have fiddled and finagled with it - changing settings, replacing batteries and spending countless hours online trying to Google trouble-shoot a solution. I have come to the conclusion that there is one simple, if not exactly cheap, solution: replace the camera.

So now the question is, "What kind of camera should I buy?". I absolutely love Sony cameras, buuuuuuuuuut... this makes the third one that has died on me in the past 10 years. I have been accused of being a Pollyanna, and I probably am to a certain extent, but even I'm beginning to wonder if it isn't time to try out a different manufacturer's wares. I'm leaning towards Canon, but I know almost nothing about the brand. For the time being, I'm using my Mother's little Canon Elph - a cute, little bitty thing about the same size as my cell phone. So far, it seems to be almost idiot-proof (a good thing for me), but I'm finding that I'm underwhelmed with the pictures I'm getting. The macro setting is okay, not great - just okay. And the color saturation is just kinda "eh". I find I have to do a LOT of fiddling in Photoshop in order to make the beads look right. I suppose I've been spoiled by the Sony, because I'm used to doing practically nothing (aside from cropping, re-sizing and a tiny bit of sharpening) in order to have usable images. Plus, and I know this is probably silly, I don't like the feeling of a tiny camera. They feel so...fragile, you know? Like one good drop off the counter and then "Sayonara!". My own camera has had a rather rough and tumble life, most recently taking a ride on the top of my bonehead brother's car and falling off onto the driveway. Which was a reminder of why I make it a rule to never lend my camera to anyone. (When your camera is a major part of your livelyhood, you shouldn't pass it around willy-nilly. Would a person with an office job let someone else take off with their laptop or their Blackberry? I think not. )

And so the camera search starts!!

Thursday, Thursday

I don't have any new beads to post today, but I will try and get better pictures of the Fairy Dance sparklers and replace them with the ones I put up yesterday. There will be more new beads listed tomorrow and at least one day this weekend (if not both) I'll have new beads to add.

My garden is coming along very nicely too! We've gotten several cups of English peas, lots of green beans and a couple jalepenos so far. The tomatoes and tomatillos are coming along nicely and there are lots of flowers on the okra. The squash and zucchini have had quite a few blooms, but so far they've all fallen off without developing into fruit. I've got more weeding to do and more mulch to put down, but then work never does end when you're talking about a garden!

Busier Than I'd Like To Be

I think the title says it all, don't you? Yup. Although I am happy to report that today was the last day of the kids' first swimming lesson session of the summer and now we have a few weeks until the second session starts up!

I've only just now gotten to take a breather and try to snap a couple of quick pictures before I have to start dinner. Unfortunately, I'm waaaaaaaay later in the day than normal when trying to get decent pictures and so neither the sun nor my camera were especially cooperative. Grrrr... I guess I'll try again tomorrow morning!!

Floral Lentils and Muffins

Got oodles of these beads made yesterday and now I'm cleaning and stringing them to add to the Boutique.

Took a brief time-out to make some muffins for the kids' breakfast - Pumpkin Apple Spice. Seriously yummy. The best part? Davis, who turns up his nose at anything pumpkin, has scarfed down 3 muffins so far! Of course, that is probably because I told him that they were apple spice muffins and didn't mention the pumpkin part until he had finished one and asked for another. Bwahaha! You know, there are just some times when a mom has to be a little devious...

Fairy Dance Trio

Well, I did get some beads made this weekend! I made 2 of these Fairy Dance trios that I'll add to the Boutique in a little bit. My goal for this week is to have something new to add to the webpage every day while still working torwards the next big Boutique update. We'll see how close I can come!

Long Time No Blog

I know it's been quite a while since I posted anything. Sorry.

I've been in a bit of a funk and not able to get much done. Mostly out of worry. One of my dearest friends has been in the hospital for the last 2 weeks with a very serious heath issue and the doctors are cautiously optimistic, saying that there is still a long hospital stay and even longer recovery ahead. I've been keeping on top of things by talking to the mother and/or clergyman nearly every day, but it just isn't the same as being there in person. Unfortunately, my friend lives many states away and hopping on a plane isn't really an option with 3 kids at home for summer vacation and a husband who we need to go to work every day. So, I've been feeling sorry for myself and worse for my friend. (Who, by the way, would be extremely irritated if they knew I'd even mentioned them, however obliquely.) I've come to the conclusion that it isn't helpful to dwell and I know my friend well enough to know that if he/she was aware of how I've been moping around feeling useless, I'd get a nice chewing out and a threat of a future butt-kicking unless I get my act together.

So, in the interest of avoiding future pain and verbal abuse (*grin*) once my friend is home and whole again, I'm gonna go make beads tonight. And again the next night. And the one after that. And I'll get back to blogging too. I've missed it terribly, but just haven't had much I could say.

Instead of saying any more, I'll just show the other 2 pots I painted for my mom's party. My favorite of the whole group is the one on the bottom, the pink one with the layered green dots - love it!

Hump Day

Ahhhhhhh.... summer?

There's weeds to pull, grass to mow, mosquitoes to avoid, swimming lessons to attend, weeds to pull, arguing children to referee, tennis try-outs, weeds to pull and more mountains of laundry to plow through. Have I mentioned the weed situation yet?

Will someone please remind me why I look forward to summer all year long? I seem to have forgotten. *sigh*

Photo Post

Just thought I'd show some pictures that have been taken recently!

Here's a cute little chipmunk that was curious about the fresh corn we were feeding the chickens. Is it awful to admit that I can't stand chipmunks? Seriously. I don't like squirrels either. Or any other kind of rodent, for that matter. Yuck! But this little guy is cute in a "awww...isn't that adorable? Now, shoo it away!" kind of way.

Here's a shot of two of our littlest chickens. In the photo here are Lola (with the blurry moving head) and Pearl (who has apparently decided that her best side is her backside.).

This is Mimi, one of Dean's favorite chickens. She's one of the prettiest shaped chickens we have, carrying herself very upright and regally. But...I'm not overly crazy about black eyes, you know? They seem a little beady and soul-sucking to me. Yeah - there goes my psychosis again...

This is my favorite chicken, Fifi. She is Queen Boss Almighty, Told-Ya-So, Ruler of All the Lesser Chickens in our flock. Look at that head up there and tell me you don't see "DINOSAUR" staring back at you. I'm telling you, if she were 20 feet tall, we'd all be chicken poop by now!

Alright, well that's all I've got for now. Time to wake up Ella and go for a walk.

Sidewalk Chalk

I went to the grocery store yesterday and picked up a few fun things for the kids along with the regular stuff on my list. The most popular of the kiddie-boo treats was definitely the sidewalk chalk. It seems every flat, paved space has been decorated with very colorful (and extremely dusty!) designs. I've got lots of interesting work to admire now as I work outside the house. There's hopscotch, abstract art, doodles and a very nice mural depicting the life story of a caveman named Ogai done in the style of the Lascaux cave paintings. Ahhhh........ Summer!

I think the kids have their eyes on "improving" our stepping stone walkway next!
